Willard’s Conceptual Designs™ emerged from his love of music and nature his style is a direct outgrowth of being brought up in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County and all the outdoor activities that the area has to offer, swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and bicycling. This lifestyle and the natural environment around Southern California and the 60's and 70's contemporary art of the era especially rock and roll poster and album cover art, are enormous influences on his art. The work is a play on positive and negative space color interaction and pattern. Perceptions in tone and color often occurring as an interaction from the breakup and change in the patterns and textures in the piece. Painted in an improvisational technique " I paint with little preplanned drawing starting with a photograph, a pattern and a vague idea of how the piece is going to evolve. The images are about change and transformation. I draw heavily from biological forms and natural phenomenon. "I would like to think that the paintings look like they are happening or growing - that they have occurred rather than conceived and painted."
