Practical Application of Stem Cells:
"The use of stem cells for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine offers the potential to treat hundreds of thousands of people that have chronic and debilitating diseases with improved outcomes and reduced health costs. Currently, stem cells are being investigated as treatments for myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), stroke and spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and a variety of other applications.

What We Are Doing:
"In my laboratory we are studying cord blood-derived stem cells in a variety of regenerative medicine systems. We are studying the ability of cord blood stem cells to become nervous tissue in order to understand HIV infection of the brain in children, with the hope of better therapies. This work should also further our ability to use these stem cells to treat patients with stroke and spinal cord injury. We have also used cord blood stem cells to grow corneas for use in transplantation of the eye. Cornea transplants are the most frequently performed transplants in the USA. We have shown that we can grow actual corneas and use these tissues for transplantation in large animals. We hope to soon have this approach in clinical trials. In collaboration with the Sarver Heart Center we have been able to treat animals with heart attacks by injecting cord blood stem cells. The animals not only survived, but their hearts seemed to grow their own bypasses and heart function was restored. Finally, we are genetically manipulating cord blood stem cells to create designer immune systems for patients. The stem cells give rise to all of a patient's immune cells after injection. These immune cells can be now targeted to attack cancers or to defend the individual against viral infections (e.g., the bird flu). We are currently in animal trials."
In August 2006, the Jimi Hendrix Foundation partnered with Dr. David T. Harris to offer our assistance in any way possible. It is our hope that we can generate both monetary and social support for him and his team.
