Music for Life Program

The James Marshall Hendrix Foundation is establishing a program to provide new musical instruments to children who have an interest in learning to play, and who could neither afford an instrument, nor lessons. This program initiative, on the part of the James Marshall Hendrix Foundation, endeavours to give children the opportunity to discover enriching and creative outlets of expression through music and art. The program teaches the values of dedication and perseverance, instilling confidence in the children through positive reinforcement.

In this program, we are focusing on the instruments that are left out of most school bands: Guitar, bass guitar, and the drums. Children will be able to choose one of these instruments (as lessons are available) and take subsidized lessons at the James Marshall Hendrix Foundation for 3 months. They will also be schooled on the history of Rock & Roll, and the powerful role Jimi Hendrix played.

At this point, our only obstacle is financing. Please help us realize our goal. Your support is most important in the opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the many benefits of music. Contact us if you are interesting in teaching guitar, bass guitar, or drum lessons!

BAND START UP PROGRAM

The band start up program is designed for determined new bands that have formed and are beginning to write songs, yet lack space, finances, connections, and the guidance to grow their dreams into a successful gigging, and recording band. Here is a brief overview of how the Band Start Up Program can help to realize those dreams:

Bands that are admitted into the program will have access to a rehearsal space, one evening a week, for 2 hours.
- The space includes a basic drum kit, but a band is welcome to use their own kit if assembly and disassembly can be accomplished within allotted time.
- Storage for your drum kit is available
-A 'band coach' will be available for each rehearsal to help with song writing, arrangement, and technique.
-If satisfactory progress is made on a band's set list and overall sound, that band may be offered free time in the recording studio, free promotions, and potentially a recording contract.

Here are the guidelines:

-ages 15 and up.

-Non-established bands only. These are bands that have never played a gig, never recorded, and only have 5 or fewer original songs

-Bands must have their own equipment. Drums may be provided for rehearsal to ease the burden of transportation, but bands must own all other needed equipment.

-Bands have 15 minutes prior and after rehearsal time to load and unload equipment.

-Absolutely no drugs or alcohol on premises

- Absolutely no disrespect to yourselves, others, the equipment, or the facility.

-Bands that do not use rehearsal time efficiently will be expelled from the program

As with any non-profit program, we require bands to go through an application process. Ours has two steps, here is the first:

Stage 1. Each band member must write an essay defining success as it pertains to the future of their band. Each band member must also explain how they, as a member of the band, will personally contribute to the success of the band.
-each band has a total of 2.5 pages, and each member must answer both halves of the essay.
-complete essays must be received by May 14.
-send essays to:

Jimi Hendrix Foundation

2000 Benson Rd, Suite 250

Renton, WA 98055

-essays must have a cover letter containing the band name, each band member's name, age, phone number, and address. Please show one band member as a primary point of contact.
-bands whose essays are chosen will be notified by May 17, and will move on to stage 2.

Stage 2. Band interview, conducted at the foundation.
-bands will need to bring their instruments and be prepared to play two songs.
-each member must be prepared to answer questions pertaining to themselves, and the band, with no help from other band members.

Bands will be informed within 3 days of their interview if they have been accepted into the program.

Rehearsal times will be tuesday evenings, between the hours of 4 and 9
-time slots will depend on availability of rehearsal rooms, and band needs.
-all rehearsals will be supervised
-participation in the band start up program can be terminated at any anytime, per the discretion of foundation staff.
